The groundbreaking of the new teen center marks more than progress—it marks a powerful return. What began as childhood memories spent on these very grounds is now fueling a bold mission to give back. This moment is more than symbolic—it’s the beginning of something transformative. Led by someone who once walked these same parks as a kid and now leads with purpose, this new chapter is deeply rooted in legacy, community, and a passion for elevating the next generation.

With plans for a full-court gym, a state-of-the-art tech center, creative studios, and programs designed to nurture growth and potential, this space will be more than just a building—it will be a catalyst. A safe haven. A launchpad for future leaders. Brooklyn Park is setting the tone for what it looks like to invest in youth, in community, and in vision—and this is just the beginning.

In case you missed it, we kicked off the month with a monumental moment for the youth of Brooklyn Park, made possible by the incredible generosity of The Thielen Foundation. With a transformative $100K donation, they’ve partnered with the Minnesota CHILL Foundation to create safe, empowering spaces where children can not only grow and learn but also embrace life-changing opportunities. This contribution, directed toward Zanewood, is more than just a financial gift—it’s a powerful investment in the future of our community.

The Thielen Foundation’s donation is a seed planted in the hearts of Brooklyn Park’s youth, and we are thrilled by the long-lasting impact it will have. This partnership is a shining example of what happens when community and collaboration come together. It’s a testament to the fact that no challenge is too great, and no dream too big, when we unite for a shared cause.

As we move forward, we remain committed to empowering the next generation of leaders, creators, and change-makers. With this investment in our youth, we are building not just brighter opportunities, but a brighter tomorrow. The future of Brooklyn Park’s youth has never been more promising, and this is just the beginning. Together, we will continue to pave the way for success, growth, and endless potential.

The MN CHILL Foundation is proud to stand alongside the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, Hennepin County, and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety in a united effort to promote real, accessible solutions for gun safety in our neighborhoods. Together, we’re working to ensure that safety is not a privilege—it’s a right available to all.

That’s why FREE gun locks are now being offered at 11 Hennepin County Library locations. These simple devices can make a life-saving difference. Whether you’re a parent, a guardian, or a gun owner, taking this step helps protect the people you care about most. Because real change doesn’t always start with a law—it often begins with a decision.

The data speaks for itself: using gun locks reduces the risk of self-inflicted firearm injuries by 78%, and lowers the chance of unintentional injuries among children by an incredible 85%. A locked gun becomes significantly less dangerous—creating a barrier that helps prevent accidents, provides a critical pause in moments of distress, and makes it harder for firearms to be stolen and misused.

Important:
Please do not bring firearms into library buildings when picking up your free lock.

Every step toward prevention is a step toward a stronger, safer community. Let’s take action together. Let’s prioritize safety and protect what matters most—our lives and the lives of those around us.

On April 17th, the Zanewood Recreation Center hosted the 3rd Annual Cops & Teens Basketball Tournament—an energetic, free community event bringing together local law enforcement and teens for a powerful evening of teamwork, connection, and competition.

This annual tradition goes beyond the game, creating space for dialogue, laughter, and lasting memories. Guests enjoyed music, concessions, and a special appearance by Lu’Cye Patterson, standout basketball player from the University of Minnesota and proud Brooklyn Park native. His presence highlighted the city’s legacy of developing elite athletes and inspired the next generation to aim high.

Brooklyn Park continues to champion events that build bridges and empower youth—on the court and beyond.

We’re excited to announce that the Minnesota Chill Foundation, a Brooklyn Park nonprofit dedicated to using athletics to enhance students’ academic and leadership skills, is one of several organizations benefiting from the upcoming Gus Macker Basketball Tournament. The tournament will take place on August 17 and 18 at North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park.

The Minnesota Chill Foundation not only focuses on basketball but also empowers youth to become better students, strong leaders, and productive community members. One of their flagship programs, the Chill Tech workforce program, offers teens and young adults the opportunity to learn valuable computer and IT skills at the Zanewood Rec Center.

This year, the foundation aims to expand the Chill Tech program with the proceeds from the Gus Macker tournament. However, they need your help to make this event a success! The new deadline for team registration is August 5, and Cindy Hill, founder and CFO of the Minnesota Chill Foundation, encourages everyone to participate. “Now is the time. Get the teams in,” Hill says. “The more the merrier. Brooklyn Park, we’re ready for you. Please come and join us.”

The registration fee for the tournament is $200, and organizers are aiming for around 200 teams. So, grab your friends, form a team, and join us for a weekend of fun and community support. Let’s come together to help local nonprofits and make a positive impact in Brooklyn Park!
