This weekend, our co-founder Cindy Hill, had the pleasure of attending the “MSR 90th Anniversary Celebration.” The event was not just a celebration but a powerful tribute to a legacy that has shaped our community for nearly a century. Growing up, our household always had a subscription to what was then the Minneapolis Spokesman-Recorder. When the publication went digital, I made sure my parents continued to stay connected.
The Minnesota Spokesman-Recorder (MSR) is Minnesota’s oldest Black-owned and Black-operated newspaper, known as the “Voice of Black Minnesota” since 1934. It has been a cornerstone of our community, providing vital news coverage, amplifying Black voices, and fostering a sense of unity. The 90th Anniversary celebration was a grand affair, featuring events like a Legacy Yacht Cruise and a gala that brought together community leaders and influencers to honor this remarkable institution.
It was especially meaningful to witness my dear friend Tracey Williams-Dillard’s incredible journey as the Publisher/CEO of MSR. Our friendship spans over 55 years, and I have watched her grow into this role with immense pride. Her legacy, along with those who came before her, will continue through her daughter Leticia Alvarez, who is poised to carry the torch forward.
This event reminded me of the enduring impact of the MSR and its commitment to truth, justice, and community. Here’s to 90 years of making history and many more to come!
